How do produce packers and cold storage buildings keep mice out?
Mice don't mind the cold as much as people think. They'll nest in insulation, in wall panels and under pallets in a cooler as long as there's food around. What are the little beetles in my flour and cereal?
They're usually flour beetles, sawtoothed grain beetles or weevils. They come home in a package from the store and then spread to everything else in the cupboard. Throw out anything with bugs in it, vacuum the shelves and corners, wipe them down, and keep flour, rice, cereal and pet food in sealed containers. If they keep coming back after that, there's probably an old package hiding somewhere, and we can help you find it.
How do produce packers control fruit flies?
Fruit flies breed in overripe and damaged produce, so cull bins, wash areas and the corners where bits of vegetables collect are the main sources. In summer heat, they go from egg to adult in about a week. Empty cull bins every day, keep them away from the packing line and the doors, and clean drains and floor channels on a schedule. Traps help with the adults, but the cleaning does most of the work. It's built into our food processing programs.
Can weevils get into seed and grain storage?
Yes. Rice weevils and granary weevils lay their eggs inside whole kernels, so a bin can look fine on the outside while larvae are developing inside the grain. Warm, damp storage speeds them up. Clean bins and bin floors completely before new product goes in, keep storage cool and dry, rotate stock so nothing sits for too long, and check incoming loads. We monitor storage areas on every visit as part of our warehouse service.
How do you keep rats out of farm and packing buildings?
Rats burrow along the foundations of farm buildings, under concrete pads and in piles of pallets and bins stored outside. Feed, culls and spilled product keep them well fed. Store pallets off the ground and away from the walls, clean up culls daily, keep feed in sealed bins, and look for burrows along the building. We set locked bait stations around the outside and traps inside. Our commercial rodent control is built for exactly this.
Why do I find silverfish in my bathtub?
They didn't come up the drain. Silverfish go looking for moisture at night, fall into the tub and then can't climb back up the smooth sides, so that's where you find them in the morning. It does mean they're living somewhere nearby, usually in the bathroom walls, under the vanity or in the basement. Lowering the humidity with a fan or dehumidifier and sealing gaps around the tub and baseboards cuts them down.
What's the difference between a wasp and a hornet?
Hornets are a type of wasp. The ones most people call wasps around here are yellowjackets, which are yellow and black and nest in the ground, walls and under eaves. Bald-faced hornets are black and white and build grey, football-shaped paper nests in trees and hedges, and they're actually a kind of yellowjacket too. European hornets are bigger and brown and yellow. All of them sting, and removing any of their nests costs $150 to $250 for a home.
