How do you control mice in a cold storage or freezer warehouse?
Mice handle the cold better than people expect. They nest in the insulation inside wall panels, in the warm spots around compressors and under pallets, and they come in through the dock doors with every load. What is a pest sighting log, and does my business need one?
It's a simple sheet or binder where staff write down any pest they see: what it was, where, when and who saw it. It tells our technicians where to look on the next visit, and it shows inspectors and auditors that your team is paying attention. Food businesses, warehouses and anyone working toward an audit should have one. We'll give you a log with your service binder and go over it at every visit.
How do shopping malls and food courts control cockroaches?
Food courts put a lot of kitchens side by side, with shared walls, drains, garbage areas and service corridors behind them. German cockroaches move easily between units, so one tenant treating alone rarely works. The mall's program should cover the service corridors, garbage and recycling areas and drains, and each food tenant should have regular service on a coordinated schedule. Doing the work at night keeps it out of sight of shoppers.
Can mice climb walls and stairs?
Yes, easily. Mice can climb rough walls like brick and stucco, run up stairs, climb inside wall cavities and along pipes and wires, and jump about 30 centimetres straight up. That's why you can find them in upstairs bedrooms and attics, not just basements. Sealing gaps at every level of the house, including around the roof line and soffits, matters as much as the foundation.
How long does ant treatment take to work?
With bait, you'll often see more ants for the first day or two as they find it and carry it back to the nest. After that, the numbers drop off, and most colonies are gone within one to two weeks. It's tempting to wipe up or spray the trails, but leave them alone so the ants keep taking the bait home. Ant control for a home costs $199 to $299.
Can pharaoh ants get into a food plant?
Yes. Pharaoh ants like warm buildings with moisture and food, and a food plant has all three. They're a real contamination risk because they travel through drains and garbage and then onto surfaces and product. Spraying makes the colony split and spread, so we use slow-acting baits placed away from product and work with your quality team on placement and records. It's part of our food processing programs.
Why are centipedes showing up in our basement storage areas?
House centipedes live where it's damp and where there are other insects to eat. If they're showing up in basement storage, the space probably has some moisture and a population of silverfish, spiders or other small insects. A dehumidifier, fixing leaks, keeping stock off the floor in plastic bins and sealing cracks all help. We'll also look for the other insects they're feeding on. We check basement and storage areas on every visit in our warehouse service.
How do food distributors keep weevils out of their stock?
Weevils usually come in with the product, already inside grains, rice, beans or pasta. Check every incoming load, rotate stock so the oldest goes out first, and don't let product sit for months. Keep storage areas cool and clean, sweep up spilled product in the racking, and quarantine any pallet with signs of insects. We use pheromone and sticky monitors to catch problems early. Why do I have so many house flies inside in summer?
House flies breed in garbage, compost, pet waste and anything rotting, and in summer heat they go from egg to adult in about a week. They get inside through torn screens, open doors and gaps around windows. Keep garbage and compost bins closed and cleaned, pick up after pets in the yard, and fix screens. If you have a lot of flies indoors and can't find a reason, check for something rotting in the house, like a forgotten bag of potatoes.
Are bald-faced hornets aggressive?
Near their nest, yes. Bald-faced hornets defend the nest harder than most wasps, and they'll come out in numbers if the nest is bumped, mowed near or hit with a ball. Away from the nest, they usually leave people alone. Their nests are grey, papery and shaped like a football, often in trees, hedges or under eaves. Don't try to knock one down. Nest removal for a home costs $150 to $250.
