The technician checks every trap, bait station and monitor on the site map and records what's in them. Then they walk the building looking for droppings, gnaw marks, insects and new gaps, talk to whoever's on site about anything staff have noticed, and treat what needs treating. Before they leave, you get a written report with what they found, what they did, and anything you need to fix on your end, like a door that doesn't close or a leak under a sink.

Can mice travel between stores that share a wall?

Easily. Older downtown buildings often share walls, basements and ceiling spaces, so a mouse problem in one store can be in the bakery next door by next week. If you're treating your unit and the mice keep coming back, that's usually why. Flour, grains and dried goods are exactly what these insects eat. Check deliveries before they go on the shelf, use the oldest stock first, and keep flour and grains in sealed bins instead of open bags. Clean up spills in corners and under equipment, because that's where they breed. We put up pheromone traps that show us when and where beetles or moths are active, so we can deal with them before they get into product.

How do I get rid of carpenter bees drilling holes in my deck?

Carpenter bees drill perfectly round holes about a centimetre across in bare or weathered wood, like deck rails, fascia boards and fences. They come back to the same holes every spring, so the damage gets worse over time. We treat the holes and the tunnels inside, and then they can be plugged and painted or stained. Finished wood is much less attractive to them, so keeping it painted or stained is the best prevention. The males buzz around a lot, but they can't sting.

Call us. If a follow-up treatment is needed, the second service is at no extra charge. Some pests, like mice, bed bugs and cockroaches, often need more than one visit to clear completely, and we'll tell you that at the start. We'd rather come back and finish the job than leave you with a problem.

In a coffee shop, fruit flies breed in milk and syrup residue, in the drip trays and drains behind the bar, in compost bins full of grounds and in the fruit or pastry display. Clean the drip trays and the drain under the espresso machine every day, rinse syrup bottles and pumps, empty compost before closing, and keep fruit covered. What should a business do about a hornet nest on its sign or awning?

Keep customers and staff away from it and don't try to knock it down. Hornets and wasps defend the nest hard, and a nest over a doorway or a sidewalk is a real stinging risk. We treat it early in the morning or in the evening, when the colony is inside and the street is quiet, and remove it once it's dead. How do you keep flies out of a food shop when the door is open in summer?

If you need the door open, put in a screen door or an air curtain over the doorway, which blows flies back out. Keep garbage and recycling away from the entrance and emptied often. Fly lights inside work well, as long as they're placed where they can't be seen from the street and aren't over food. How do I get rid of pavement ants on my driveway and patio?

Pavement ants nest under concrete, interlock and patio stones, and the little piles of sand between the stones are their work. They're mostly a nuisance outside, but they'll follow cracks into the house looking for food. Bait placed along their trails is the best way to kill the colony, because the workers carry it back underneath. Refilling the joints with polymeric sand afterward makes it harder for them to come back. Ant control costs $199 to $299.

Why are there wasps in my attic?

Wasps get into attics through gaps in soffits, roof vents and the spaces where the roof meets the wall. Once inside, they can build a big nest out of sight. You might hear buzzing in the ceiling or see wasps coming out of one spot near the roof line. Don't seal the hole while they're active, or they may chew through the ceiling into the house. We treat the nest, and once it's dead the gap can be sealed.
