How should landlords deal with mice in older rental houses and duplexes?

Yes. Big digs, demolition and sewer work disturb rat burrows and push the rats into the nearest buildings with food and shelter. If a project is starting near you, check your door sweeps, seal gaps around pipes and keep garbage in closed bins. Bait stations around the outside of your building, set up early, catch them before they settle in.
Can a small business afford regular pest control?

Clutter does make them harder to get rid of, because it gives them more places to hide, but having them says nothing about how clean you are.
Why do spiders come inside in the fall?
Some spiders come in looking for shelter as the nights get colder, and others were already inside and are just easier to spot. Late summer and fall is also mating season for house spiders, so the males wander more and end up out in the open. Sealing gaps around windows and doors, cutting back plants that touch the house, and vacuuming webs and egg sacs keeps the numbers down.
How do small takeout kitchens keep cockroaches under control?
Small kitchens have a lot of heat, grease and deliveries in very little space, which is perfect for German cockroaches. Break down cardboard boxes as soon as they arrive, clean under fryers and grills every night, fix dripping taps and don't leave food out after closing. Why do silverfish show up in older shops and offices?
Older buildings often have damp basements, old plaster and lots of paper, cardboard and stored stock, and silverfish love all of it. They come out at night and hide in cracks during the day. A dehumidifier in the basement, storing paper and stock in plastic bins and sealing cracks along baseboards cuts them down. We can treat wall gaps and storage areas as part of our small business service.
Do barbershops and salons get bed bugs?
They can, though it's not common. Customers can bring bed bugs in on coats and bags, and fabric waiting chairs give them a place to hide. Vinyl or leather chairs are easier to check and wipe down, and hooks for coats keep them off the seats. If you or a customer spots a bug, bag it, call us and we'll inspect the shop after hours. What do cockroach droppings look like?
German cockroach droppings look like black pepper or coffee grounds, and you'll find them in corners of cupboards, along hinges, behind the fridge and stove, and under the sink. Larger cockroaches leave droppings shaped more like small pellets. You may also see brown smear marks along walls where they travel. If you find droppings, set a few sticky traps to see how big the problem is, and call for an inspection.
What are the little brown beetles in my kitchen cupboard?
They're usually drugstore beetles or cigarette beetles. They're tiny, reddish-brown and round, and they feed on flour, spices, cereal, dried pasta, pet food and even dried flower arrangements. Find the package they're living in, which is often an old box of spices or a bag of pet food at the back, and throw it out. Vacuum and wipe the shelves, and store dry food in sealed containers.
