Frequently Asked Questions About Our Professional Pest Control Services
How do plazas with several restaurants stop cockroaches from spreading?
In a plaza, restaurants share walls, plumbing, ceiling spaces and often a garbage area, so cockroaches move from one kitchen to the next. If only one restaurant treats, the roaches just shift next door and come back later. The best results come when the plaza owner and tenants work together, treating the affected units and their neighbours on the same schedule and keeping the shared garbage area clean. We're happy to set up a plan for the whole plaza.
Can you treat a restaurant without closing it?
Yes. We do restaurant visits before opening or after closing, so nothing happens during service. Most of the work is gel bait in cracks and crevices, traps and monitors, which don't require you to shut down or clear the kitchen. In the rare case a bigger treatment is needed, we'll plan it for your quietest day and tell you exactly how long the kitchen needs to stay empty.
What should a store do if a customer sees a cockroach or a mouse?
Deal with it right away, and calmly. Thank the customer, clean up what you can and call your pest control company that day. Have staff check the area and note anything else they find. We'll inspect, treat and give you a written report, which is also useful if the customer complains to the health department or posts about it online. Showing you acted fast goes a long way.
If I see one cockroach, are there more?
Usually, yes. Cockroaches hide during the day, so if you see one out in the open, especially in daylight, there are probably more in the walls, under the fridge or behind the stove. A single German cockroach egg case holds around 30 to 40 eggs. A roach that came in a grocery box might really be just one, but set a few sticky traps to find out before it turns into a problem.
Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?
It's very hard. You can help a lot by washing and drying bedding and clothes on high heat, vacuuming the mattress seams and baseboards, putting the mattress in a bed bug encasement and cutting down clutter. But bed bugs hide in tiny cracks and lay eggs that survive most store-bought sprays, so they usually come back. A professional treatment with a follow-up visit is the most reliable way to finish the job.
How do bakeries deal with cockroaches near ovens and proofers?
Ovens, proofers and mixers give off steady heat, and cockroaches love warm, tight spaces with crumbs and flour nearby. They hide behind and under equipment, inside motor housings and in wall cracks behind the line. Pull equipment out to clean behind it regularly, keep flour spills swept up and seal cracks in the walls. We use gel bait in those cracks and growth regulators that stop breeding, with follow-up visits until they're gone. It's part of our restaurant and bakery service.
How do butcher shops and fish markets control flies?
Meat scraps, blood, fish waste and wet garbage attract house flies and blow flies, especially in summer. Keep waste in sealed containers, get it picked up often, wash down floors and drains daily and keep doors closed or fitted with air curtains. Fly lights work well in these shops as long as they're placed away from display cases and cutting areas. We set this up as part of our business pest control.
How do grocery stores deal with weevils in rice and dry goods?
Weevils and pantry beetles often arrive already inside bags of rice, flour, beans or spices from the supplier. Check deliveries before they go on the shelf, sell the oldest stock first and pull any bag with insects or tiny holes right away, along with the packages beside it. Clean spilled product from shelves and corners. We use pheromone and sticky monitors in the stockroom to catch problems early. See our grocery store service.
Is it a bad sign if I see rats during the day?
Usually, yes. Rats are mostly active at night, so seeing one in daylight often means there are a lot of them competing for food, or that something has disturbed their nest, like construction or a demolition nearby. Check your yard for burrows along fences, under decks and around sheds, and take away food sources like bird feeders and open garbage. Rat control for a home costs $299 to $399.
Are pharaoh ants dangerous?
They don't sting or bite, so they're not dangerous to touch. The concern is that they walk through garbage, drains and bathrooms and then onto food and counters, which is why they're a serious problem in hospitals. In a home or apartment, they're mostly a nuisance, but a hard one to get rid of. Don't spray them, because that makes the colony split. Baits are the way to go.

Why us
Pest Control for Scarborough Restaurants, Plazas and Plants
Scarborough's plazas are packed with restaurants, bakeries and grocery stores, and its industrial areas have more manufacturing than most of Toronto. Both are tough places to keep pests out, because food, cardboard, shipping and shared walls give mice and cockroaches plenty of chances. Our Scarborough team runs restaurant programs, grocery store service and manufacturing pest control, with visits planned around your hours.

Every commercial client gets a site map, scheduled visits and a written report after each visit, ready for a DineSafe inspector or an auditor. If you need us between visits, we usually respond within 24 to 48 hours. If you'd rather keep it low-key, we can come in an unmarked vehicle.

Scarborough's industrial areas, from the Golden Mile to the plants along the 401, include food producers, wholesalers and manufacturers that ship all over the province. Those buildings need documented programs that hold up to customer audits and health inspections, with traps and stations on a map, regular visits and reports that show trends over time. We set those up and keep them current.

In Scarborough homes and apartments, the big ones are cockroaches, bed bugs, mice and rats. Homes near the Bluffs, Highland Creek and the Rouge get spiders, centipedes and wasps too. We also treat house, carpenter and pharaoh ants, hornets, carpenter bees, silverfish, flies, fruit flies, weevils and beetles.

GTA Exterminators has been in business since 2017. We're licensed, insured and covered by WSIB. If you run a restaurant or a plaza in Scarborough, call 647-849-4441 and we'll walk through it with you for free.
