How do you get rid of pharaoh ants in a condo or apartment building?
Pharaoh ants are tiny, yellowish ants that nest inside buildings, in wall voids, behind baseboards and along pipes, and they travel between units easily. The big mistake is spraying them, because that makes the colony split into several new ones and spread further. The right approach is slow-acting bait placed in the affected units and the units around them, followed up until the activity stops. It takes patience, but it works.
What is an integrated pest management (IPM) program?
IPM means preventing pests first and using pesticides only where and when they're needed. In practice, that's inspecting, sealing entry points, fixing the conditions that attract pests, monitoring with traps and other devices, and keeping records. Treatments are targeted instead of sprayed everywhere on a schedule. Most audits and many commercial landlords now expect an IPM approach, and it's how we run our commercial programs.
How should a condo building keep pests out of the garbage room?
Garbage rooms are where most condo pest problems start. Keep the chute doors closed and have the chute cleaned regularly, empty bins before they overflow, wash the floor and walls on a schedule, and fix any drains that hold water. Make sure the room's door closes on its own and has a sweep at the bottom. We set traps and bait stations in and around the room and check them on every visit.
Do mice leave on their own in the spring?
A few might wander back outside when it warms up, but most won't. If they've found food, water and a warm place to nest in your house, they have no reason to leave, and they'll keep breeding. A female mouse can have a new litter every few weeks. Waiting it out usually means a bigger problem by summer.
Will wasps come back to the same nest next year?
No. A wasp nest is only used for one season. In the fall, the workers die off and only the new queens survive, hiding through the winter somewhere sheltered. In spring, each queen starts a brand new nest. They often pick the same kinds of spots as last year, though, so if you had a nest under the eaves, check there again in June.
How do you get rid of ants in an office kitchen?
Office kitchens get pavement ants coming up through floor cracks, odorous house ants after rain, and sometimes pharaoh ants in bigger buildings. They're after crumbs, sugar, spilled coffee and anything left in desk drawers. Wipe counters at the end of the day, keep sugar and snacks sealed, and don't spray the trails, because that scatters them. We use baits placed out of sight, after hours, as part of our office pest control.
How do business parks deal with hornet nests in the landscaping?
Bald-faced hornets love the trees and shrubs that line business park walkways and parking lots, and the nests often go unnoticed until a landscaper trims a hedge and gets swarmed. Ask your landscaping crew to watch for grey paper nests in early summer and report them instead of cutting around them. We treat nests in the evening, when the colony is inside, and remove them once they're dead. Business parks can add early-summer nest checks to our business service.
Why are there carpet beetles in our office?
Carpet beetle larvae are small, fuzzy and brown, and they feed on wool, felt, dust, hair and dead insects that collect along carpet edges, under furniture and in ceiling spaces. Adults fly in through windows in spring and gather on sills. They're usually a minor problem, but they can damage wool carpets and fabric panels. Thorough vacuuming along edges and under furniture is the main fix. We cover it in our service for commercial buildings.
How long do fruit flies live?
An adult fruit fly can live for several weeks, often around 40 to 50 days at room temperature, and a female can lay hundreds of eggs in that time. In a warm kitchen, an egg can become an adult in about a week. That's why a few flies turn into a cloud so fast. Getting rid of what they're breeding in, like overripe fruit, sticky recycling or a dirty drain, breaks the cycle.
Can cockroaches fly?
The German cockroach, which is the one almost always found in Ontario homes and apartments, has wings but very rarely flies. It runs. Some larger cockroaches can glide short distances, but you're unlikely to see that indoors here. If you're seeing cockroaches run when you turn on the light, it's worth setting a few sticky traps to see how many there are, and calling for an inspection.
